Hagamos un poco de memoria. El Principio: Un dia en el Banesto de Denia, un tal Neil Collen estaba hablando con el director del banco, Paco Bisquert (padre de Edu), no se como pero en su charla trataron el tema del Rugby y Paco le comentó a Neil que conocía a un arquitecto en Denia, Luis de la Cuadra (padre de Gorka y tío de Iñaki, Javiton, etc...) que había jugado rugby en Madrid y Valencia, del mismo modo, le hablo de un tal Jose Ramon Apraiz que también vivia en Denia y que había jugado en Madrid, Alemania y que por un tiempo había sido el 15 de la Selección Española. Una vez puestos todos ellos en contacto, se reunieron y decidieron ponerse a la busca y captura de gente interesada en pasárselo bien jugando a rugby en Denia y tomándose unas cervezas tras los partidos y entrenamientos. De este modo, el Denia Rugby Club fue fundado en 1991, formado por un grupo de extranjeros afincados en Denia, un grupo de españoles que en algún momento de sus vidas habían jugado u oído hablar de rugby y otros que pensaban que el futbol era el único deporte que existía, bueno también estaba el tenis !!!!! Con esta idea en mente, este grupo comenzó a verse una vez por semana en la playa del Cagarritar, para jugar unos tocatas y a medida que el grupo se fue haciendo grande, se comenzó a realizar una especie de entrenamientos de rugby. Recuerdo que solíamos entrenar en la playa con la única luz de la carretera de Las Marinas, a veces metíamos un coche en la arena para empujarlo de un lado a otro, este fue nuestro primer melier. Del mismo modo que ocurre ahora, en el Denia RC solíamos tener una gran mezcla de idiomas y nacionalidades con lo que la comprensión a veces era dudosa. Algunos de los nombres que ayudaron a que el Denia Rugby Club fuera creciendo son: Hugh Mckenzie, Rupert James Bond, Louis King, los hermanos Jeffs (Seamus, Danny & Tim (primer Capitan del Denia RC), Edu-Vet, Rafa Devesa, Pierre Chapar, Miguel Ferrer, Willy, Paco Bisquert, Pepe Crespo, Xavier Sentous, Quique Botella, Phil Ridout, Rodri Pateman, Pescata, Mac, Giusseppe, Mauricio, etc... Ese mismo año, 1991, uno de nuestros jugadores tuvo una gran idea: Invitar a otros equipos y organizar un torneo de Rugby en la playa de Denia. A todo el mundo le pareció una excelente idea y así se crearon las reglas del Torneo Seven Rugby-Playa Ciudad de Denia, convirtiendo sin saberlo al club en pioneros en este tipo de competición hoy en día tan extendida en España. Participaron varios equipos de Madrid, Valencia y alrededores y fue un gran éxito. Este año celebraremos la edición XIII. El presente: Este año el Denia Rugby Club ha finalizado la temporada como Campeón de la 1ª División Territorial Sur y 2º en la Comunidad Valenciana, también ha disputado la promoción de ascenso a 1ª División Nacional habiendo conseguido el derecho a ascender. Sobre nuestros chicos (la escuela de Rugby), se puede decir que ya está afianzada entre las mejores escuelas de Rugby españolas gracias a los éxitos conseguidos en liga, en el Campeonato de España y habiendo logrado este año que 10 jugadores de esta hayan sido aceptados como becados en Cheste en el Plan de Formación de Deportistas de Elite, en donde compaginaran su formación académica y rugbystica. El Futuro: Hace unos 4 años, el Denia RC casi desapareció. Nos faltaban jugadores para poder completar un equipo y poder entrar en competición, la gente no aparecía en los entrenamientos y realizar estos con apenas 4 personas era muy difícil y por ello estuvimos 2 años ausentes de participar en la liga. A pesar de ello, algunos de nosotros continuábamos viéndonos jugando algún tocata y tomando unas cervezas luego. Además cada año sin falta, organizábamos el Torneo de Rugby-Playa. Una noche, después de algunas cervezas, estábamos intentando analizar el porque no teníamos un equipo compitiendo en liga y porque habíamos desaparecido y nos dimos cuenta que habíamos cometido un gran error, "no habíamos sembrado para luego poder recoger la cosecha" y con esta idea en mente decidimos comenzar en el otro sentido, para poder construir una casa, primero debíamos hacer los cimientos y decidimos centrarnos en los más jóvenes y en crear una escuela de rugby que nos permitiera formar jugadores que con el tiempo llegasen a formar parte del primer equipo. Teniendo esto claro, durante la celebración del X Seven Rugby-Playa, conocimos a Antonio Monsell quien se prestó voluntario en gastar parte de su tiempo en organizar y montar la escuela. Así en el 2002, gracias al empeño de Antonio Monsell, se creó la escuela de rugby, empezando en verano en la playa con tan solo 8 niños. Hoy podemos decir que hemos logrado introducir el deporte del Rugby entre los más jóvenes de la comarca, teniendo unos 60 niños jugando regularmente a Rugby, con equipos participando en competiciones oficiales en categorías pre-benjamín, benjamín, alevín, infantil y cadete. Como por entonces estábamos entrenando-enseñando a los chavales, poco a poco mas gente mayor se unía a los entrenamientos quienes se mostraban interesados en jugar mas y sin darnos cuenta ya éramos un grupo de unas 20 personas con ganas de Rugby y así re-iniciamos los entrenamientos del equipo Senior. Ahora lo estamos pasando en grande y cada vez mas gente nos conoce y quiere formar parte de nuestro Club. Nuestra tarea más importante ahora es la de seguir manteniendo el equipo Senior en liga regular, introduciendo este deporte cada vez en mas gente y esperar hasta el momento en que los chavales de la escuela puedan formar parte del primer equipo. En ese momento podremos decir que hemos creado un gran Club ya que habremos conseguido introducir el deporte en nuestra comarca, facilitando a los mas jóvenes el jugar a Rugby desde temprana edad y crecer como jugadores, como personas, haciendo amigos, aprendiendo a respetar tanto a los compañeros como a los adversarios y sobre todo disfrutando.

Let's make some memories. The beggining: One day in the Banesto Bank in Denia, Neil Collen was talking with Paco Bisquert (Edu's father) the Bank Manager and I do not know why they got to talk about rugby, he introduce him a Denia architect Luis De La Cuadra (Groka's father Iñaki and Javi's uncle) that played rugby in Madrid and Valencia and also he introduced Jose Ramon Apraiz that played rugby in Madrid, Germany and for a period was Spain's full back, they got together and started to look for some people interested to have some fun playing rugby and having a few beers after, or maybe it was in the other way. Well so, Denia Rugby Club was founded in 1991 with a group of foreigners living under the Denia's Sun a few spanish that played some rugby at some period in their lives and others that thought that football was the only sport in the world, well there was also tennis !!!!!! With this idea on mind, they started to meet once a week at the beach for doing some touche rugby and as the group was growing they started to do some kind of rugby training. I remember we use to train on the beach with the street lights and we used to bring a car into the beach sand to push it from one side to the other (it was our scrum machine). As it is now in Denia RC, at that period we use to have a great mixture of languages and nationalities playing in the same team. Some other names that helped growing rugby in Denia were: Hugh Mckenzie, Rupert James Bond, Louis King, the Jeffs brothers (Seamus, Danny & Tim (Denia's first captain), Edu-Vet, Rafa Devesa, Miguel Ferrer, Willy, Paco Bisquert, Pepe Crespo, Xavier Sentous, Quique Botella, Phil Ridout, Rodri Pateman, Pescata, Mac, Giusseppe, Mauricio, Pierre Chapar, etc... That year one of our players had a great idea, to organize a Seven Rugby tournament on the beach. Everybody liked it and we put together the rules for that game without knowing it, we were introducing the Beach-Rugby in Spain, organizing the first ever Seven Beach-Rugby Tournament in Spain, we invited some teams from Valencia & Madrid and it was a great succes. This year we are already organizing the 13th Tournament. The present: This year we just finished our season and we have been Levante South Champions and seconds on the Valencian Comunity. We played the promotion to the National League and we finished seconds on it. Our kids (Rugby School) are doing great and in mid May they will travel to Valladolid to play the Spanish Championship. For sure they will have a great succes. Our main problem to grow rugby in Denia are the facilities as we are a minority sport, it is unknown by most of the people and we have always to adapt ourselves to the football pitches, to fit our training times to what is left by other sports and so. Also as rugby is not so popular here, it is very hard to find sponsorship and it is costing us quite big amounts of money from our pockets. But we are working to make all this change. The Future: About 4 years ago, Denia RC almost disapeared. We were missing players, people did not find time for training and going to train with only 4 people was very difficult, we even did not had players for having some kind of friendly game, and we did no get into regular competition for 2 years. Even that, a few of us was keeping meeting, playing some touch rugby and having some beers after. Also every year we kept organizing the Seven Beach Rugby Tournament with lots of succes. One night, after some drinks we were analyzing why we were not in competition and why we almost disapeared and we get to the point that it was because we made a big mistake, "we did not put seeds on the ground to grow" and with this idea we decided to start in the other way, for building a house we must built the foudations first, and we decided to focus on the kids and a rugby school. With this idea on mind and during our 10th Beach-Rugby Seven Tournament we met Antonio Monsell who was ready to spend some time to organize the school and with the help of a few of us Denia's Rugby school was born with only 8 kids (most of them sons of players). This was just 2 years ago and it is already having great succes with about 60 kids playing rugby regularly and being alrady a reference on Valencia & Spain's rugby schools. As we were training-teaching the kids, more and more "older" people was interested to play rugby so we got to have an interesting group of people and we started to train again as a team. Now we are having great fun and more and more people knows about us in Denia. Our most important task at the moment is to keep playing rugby in a regular championship, trying to introduce this sport to new people and wait until the moment that kids from the rugby school get to the age to play with the senior team. At this moment we will be able to say that our club is great, because we have been able to introduce rugby in our area giving the possibility to kids to start playing at early age and to grow as players into the club enjoying it.
